Celebrating its Centennial Year in 1999, ASLA currently represents
more than 12,000 members in 47 chapters across the United States
with headquarters in Washington, DC. Private, public, and academic
practitioners have a professional home at ASLA as do international
practitioners and members of related professions.
The Washington Chapter (WASLA) was established in 1973 and includes
approximately 330 members around the state. The chapter holds up to
seven chapter meetings through the year, as well as an annual
Expo/Trade Show, annual university student award competitions and a
biennial Chapter Awards Banquet.
WASLA helps fund student scholarships and the Architects &
Engineers Legislative Council, and produces a quarterly newsletter
and website to keep members and others informed about issues and
activities pertaining to ASLA and the profession.
WASLA members often participate in meetings and events with allied
professional groups such as the American Institute of Architects and
the Washington Association of Landscape Professionals, and volunteer
their expertise for community assistance projects and public events
such as the Northwest Flower and Garden Show.
Landscape architecture is the art and science of analysis,
planning, design, management, preservation and rehabilitation of the
land. The scope of the profession includes site planning, garden
design, environmental restoration, town or urban planning, park and
recreation planning, regional planning, and historic preservation.
Practitioners share a commitment of achieving a balance between
preservation, use and management of the country’s resources.
