January and February are important months they are filled with reminders to continually celebrate minority landscape architects and their contribution to our profession. It is a time to think about our work in and with diverse communities. Martin Luther King Day this past January 18thAlice Walker's birthday on February 9thAbraham Lincoln's birthday on February 12th, and Frederick Douglas's birthday on February 14th are all days to remind us about the importance of equality and civil rights.

In ASLA's 2015 Survey of Graduating Students, only 1% of graduating landscape architecture students identified as Black, 8% as Hispanic, and 20% as Asian or Pacific Islander. While diversity is increasing slowly, the majority of the respondents identified as White (68%). This is significant, since our profession will not reflect the population in years to come. In 2043, the US is projected to become a majority-minority nation for the first time. Minorities, now 37% of the population, are estimated to make up 57% of the population in the year 2060. The communities that landscape architects work in are already culturally diverse, and in order to best serve and understand our country's increasingly diverse communities, and remain relevant, landscape architects must hail from those communities.

It is important to encourage outdoor play and find ways to reconnect children with nature. This innovative program discusses research-based benefits of combining the manufactured play environment with the living landscape. It also demonstrates how to implement best practices of design and discusses strategies for overcoming potential barriers, and how to naturalize existing and new playgrounds. Participants will walk away with an array of educational resources, funding sources, and practical ideas on how to get started.

For over four decades, Kenichi Nakano graced the Pacific Northwest with exceptionally subtle and inviting modernist design, generously contributed to community and civic life, and mentored generations of students and professionals of all disciplines.

On August 8, 2012, we lost our teacher, mentor, and friend all too soon.

Your gift in memory of Kenichi to the Kenichi Nakano Endowed Scholarship Fund will leave a lasting legacy and support outstanding students in the University of Washington's Department of Landscape Architecture.

UWLA PAC, Internship + Research Committee

The Landscape Department at the University of Washington has been working hard on providing its students with valuable resources that can better connect them with local employers for internships and practicum opportunities.

Prior to developing these resources we sent a survey to our local employer list to get feedback on what firms wanted and if they would use specific resources. We took this information and over the summer developed a space where employers can submit internships and practicums and positions to a page that is only accessible by our students...
