2016 WASLA Professional Award Winners

The 2016 WASLA Professional Awards were held on November 3rd at the Januik Novelty Hill Winery in Woodinville, WA. The Colorado-based jury consisted of a diverse, allied profession panel that included: Jonathan Cappelli, Nancy Locke, Jeremy Ehly, Laurel Raines, and Ken Schroeppel. The jury bestowed nineteen awards to Washington Landscape Architects for their outstanding work. This year 51 submissions were received. Projects had to be completed by a landscape architect registered in Washington State. The work could be completed anywhere. Projects were submitted in January and adjudicated in February. The Professional Awards have been ongoing for the past 30 years, and are now held every year.

The awarded projects are listed below. 

Bullitt Center and McGilvra Place Park
Award of Excellence in General Design over $500,000 Construction Budget
Landscape Architect: Berger Partnership

Jury Comments: These demonstrative design elements could each garner an individual award but the thoughtful combination within this site is what makes it truly worthy of the Award of Excellence.

Lower Rainier Vista & Pedestrian Land Bridge
Honor Award in General Design over $500,000 Construction Budget
Landscape Architect: Gustafson Guthrie Nichol
Location: Seattle, Washington
Owner: University of Washington
Jury Comments: Well executed design restrain is often overlooked, but this jury discussed and laded this project's clean lines and simple gestures.

Chatham University Eden Hall Campus
Honor Award in General Design over $500,000 Construction Budget
Landscape Architect: Mithun
Location: Richland Township, Pennsylvania
Owner: Chatham University
Jury Comments: Stunning project that was thoughtfully designed, a site that inspires and educates visitors. The hardscapes are very well done and allows the productive landscape to be center stage.

The Wanapum Heritage Center
Honor Award in General Design over $500,000 Construction Budget
Landscape Architect: Mithun
Location: Matawa, Washington
Owner: Grant County Public Utility District and the Wanapum People
Jury Comments: The jury found a deep appreciation for the restrained materials palette, when combined with impeccable restoration, allowed for this project to reflect and honor the values of the Wanapum people.

Honor Award in Residential Design Multi-Family
Landscape Architect: Hewitt
Location: Seattle, Washington
Owner: The Wolff Company
Jury Comments: A really great job creating unique spaces and experiences not found in rapidly produced multi-family projects. Private entries and patios feel very secluded despite the road proximity. Top of its class with simple bold elements.

Jury Comments: The graphic organization of the submittal provided a clear vision of the project and the allowed the jury to understand the steps necessary for a successful implementation.
