President's Remarks
Laura Thompson

Happy New Year everyone! I think many of you will agree when I say that the holidays, and work leading up to the holiday season, can be pretty darn hectic. Now that the new year is upon us, and hopefully the chaos has settled a bit, I think that it is a perfect time to reflect on all of the successes we've had over the last year. Let me tell ya, this has been a very busy year, well worth celebrating, for WASLA committees and all of our members. Check out the highlights of 2016!

2017 WASLA Conference - Where History Meets Nature

The Washington Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects is happy to announce the 2017 Annual Conference, Where History Meets Nature, held in the City of Spokane. This year we celebrate city planning that exemplifies an essential sensitivity to each site’s distinct history, future potential and formative natural processes. With 16 educational sessions, 6 LA CES-approved PDH, 2 receptions, and 1 renown Keynote Speaker, it will be the State’s largest gathering of landscape professionals.

We enthusiastically welcome Charles “Chip” Sullivan, ASLA, Landscape Architecture Professor, Artist and Author as our lunchtime Keynote Speaker. Chip will explain how transformative powers of observation help create positive environmental change and shape a sustainable future.

Registration is now open! Early Bird pricing is available through February 22: Register now!

The Conference kicks off with an Opening Reception at the Left Bank Wine Bar, Thursday April 20. Only 50 tickets will be available for purchase to Conference registrants.

We are extremely grateful to our generous sponsors who are helping to make this event a success. Check out our sponsors & exhibitors.

Sponsorship opportunities are going fast, so please visit our website for details.

Join us April 21 at the Spokane Conference Center, for a unique opportunity to explore the history of Spokane and partake in meaningful discussions about place-shaping as they relate to the built environment, historic preservation, and city structure!

Auction to Benefit Student Work in Zimbabwe

Painted Dog Research Trust USA is an organization founded by Carrie Culp, ASLA, in 2014 to link local Washington college students with projects that benefit their education and benefit the conservation of the African painted dog (Lycaon pictus).

In January 2017, PDRT-USA will undertake our third such project. Working with Brian Gerich and University of Washington's landscape architecture department, this Design Activism studio will focus on the design and development of a natural bio-remediation wetland to treat all waste water on a sustainable research campus in Zimbabwe, called Sizinda. Once developed and constructed (in a future design/build studio), this project will also be shared with local people as a replicable technology for their own communities.

Alley Acres Seeks Board Members

Alleycat Acres reconnects people, place, and produce by building a network of community run farms. We transform public and private space into community run farms where volunteers are able to take home produce and excess produce is donated to local food banks. Our current projects include a farm site on a Seattle Department of Transportation right of way, an edible walking trail on Seattle City Lights land, a farm site at Catholic Community Services/Monica's Village, and a series of gardens in parking strips in the Central District. We have been working in Seattle since 2010, and are currently fiscally sponsored by Sustainable Seattle, however we are working towards attaining our own 501(c)3 status in 2017. In doing so we are seeking board members; we would feel very fortunate to have a landscape architect as part of this team. We are looking for board members that are enthusiastic about and supportive of the work that we do, people who enjoy working collaboratively and are able to make an appropriate time commitment. 2017 ASLA Annual Meeting: Call for Presentations

ASLA is now accepting proposals for the 2017 Annual Meeting and EXPO education program, taking place October 20-23, 2017 in Los Angeles. If you are interested in presenting and sharing your knowledge with the landscape architecture profession, we encourage you to submit a proposal through our online system.

In order to successfully submit a presentation for consideration, the following items are needed for each presentation: speaker names with a biography, a session title, marketing statement, learning objectives, outline, and sources. Submissions should speak to panel diversity and audience engagement. Additionally, all presenters must sign the speaker terms and agreement prior to the February 1 submission deadline.

Please visit the submission site for detailed information.

Synergies Between SITES and LEED

The SITES and LEED rating systems are complementary, and can be used in tandem! If you're seeking to further define, improve or demonstrate the site sustainability aspects of your project, you can benefit from certifying to both SITES and LEED. We want to help you by simplifying your certification experience at the intersection of the rating systems.
