President's Message
David Stipe, ASLA, LLA

The office staff recently mailed out a save the date card and call for proposals for the 2015 annual conference to be held on May 29th.  The event will be held in Wenatchee at the Convention Center just north of the historic downtown.  This is the first time our chapter has hosted a traveling conference, which is a result of the 2014 Executive Committee’s commitment to continue to engage professionals throughout the State.  We are confident that holding the conference in Wenatchee makes attendance at the event more palatable for folks from Spokane and the Tri-Cities.  Over the past several years, Laura Thompson, our Eastern Washington Representative, has been doing great things to breathe life into our chapter in Spokane.  We hope this year’s location represents the potential to have the conference in Spokane within the next several years...

Editor's Note
Stephanie Stroud

Though it may be hard to adjust to a regular forty-hour work week after the sugar and champagne coma from the Holidays, be consoled that 2015 will be filled with many intriguing and enriching opportunities. Educational sessions aplenty will be held at our annual conference this year in Wenatchee, where plenty of vitamin D will be radiating in the sunshine for those of us who are deprived in Seattle...

WASLA Develops a 3-5 Year Strategic Plan

In October of last year, The WASLA Executive Committee met with ASLA’s Barbara Drobins-Fles, Director of Member and Chapter Services at the ASLA to craft a three-to-five year strategic plan for our chapter.  This plan will help WASLA focus our efforts, to ensure we are meeting the needs of both our members and ASLA...

Celebrate Landscape Architecture Month with a Community Design Charette!

The small community of Kendall, which sits nestled in the Columbia Valley in northeastern Whatcom County, will be the site of the annual WASLA-National Park Service community assistance project in 2015.  Situated near the junction of two state highways that provide access to the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest and the Mount Baker Ski Area, the unincorporated community is a quiet, rural place. Originally developed as a spot for vacation homes and mountain rentals, it is now home to approximately 4,000 residents and a handful of destinations: a library, elementary school, resource center, churches, and two convenience stores...

Letter From the Committee Chair: 2015 Annual WASLA Conference

As the new year begins landscape architects are faced with environmental challenges unprecedented in scale and scope. Staying ahead and adapting in these changing times is vital. WASLA’s 2015 conference being held in Wenatchee, WA has proposals coming in and we are working hard to create educational sessions which are informative and parallel our professions current design challenges and have the ability to strengthen our design discourse...

As the new chair of the Professional Development Committee, I’m excited about the plans taking shape for 2015 for continuing education activities offered through WASLA.  We have a number of fun and informative events planned, kicking off with the ‘Introduction to Irrigation Design Course’ in February. Design in Detroit!

Join the UW Department of Landscape Architecture and Professional Advisory Committee, ARCADE, UW Runstad Center for Real Estate Studies, and UW Department of Urban Design and Planning at the Frye Art Museum for a panel discussion on Detroit with thought leaders who are at the heart of the city's transformation and revival.

Detroit provides a means to study fundamental urban transformation and innovation that comes from both the top down and the grassroots level. The renewal happening in the city presents a ripe opportunity to evaluate and test civic strategies with the goal of understanding how to maximize a city’s resiliency in the service of rapid positive change in the future. Indeed, the seeds of what's happening in Detroit exist in all cities, though to lesser degrees...

Support the Kenichi Nakano Endowed Scholarship Fund for Landscape Architecture

For over four decades, Kenichi Nakano graced the Pacific Northwest with exceptionally subtle and inviting modernist design, generously contributed to community and civic life, and mentored generations of students and professionals of all disciplines.

On August 8, 2012, we lost our teacher, mentor, and friend all too soon.

Your gift in memory of Kenichi to the Kenichi Nakano Endowed Scholarship Fund will leave a lasting legacy and support outstanding students in the University of Washington's Department of Landscape Architecture.

UW Landscape Architecture Internship/ Practicum Portal

UWLA PAC, Internship + Research Committee

The Landscape Department at the University of Washington has been working hard on providing its students with valuable resources that can better connect them with local employers for internships and practicum opportunities.

Prior to developing these resources we sent a survey to our local employer list to get feedback on what firms wanted and if they would use specific resources. We took this information and over the summer developed a space where employers can submit internships and practicums and positions to a page that is only accessible by our students...
