THE SCIENCE, SERVICES, AND PERFORMANCE OF SUSTAINABLE SITES
Wednesday, May 18, 2011
The Washington Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects and the University of Washington Botanic Gardens present this symposium on issues surrounding the Sustainable Sites Initiative. This day-long event will dig into the science behind and intent of the
Sustainable Sites Initiative with a focus on how the SITES guidelines can transform our urban ecosystems, horticulture industry, and design and construction practices. Educational sessions and small group dialogue will identify the current obstacles and brainstorm ways to
hurdle them. The day will build cross-disciplinary relationships, with focused discussion among horticultural specialists, landscape architects, nursery industry representatives, arborists, planners, scientists, landscape maintenance contractors and city staff.
Keynote address:
- Urban Ecosystem Services by Kathleen Wolf, Ph.D., University of Washington and US Forest Service
- The What and Why of Sustainable Sites Initiative. David McDonald, Seattle Public Utilities
- Salmon Safe Program: Local Performance Demonstrated. Ellen Southard
- Urban Design and Sustainable Sites: Dual Performances or Dueling Performances? Brice Maryman, SvR Design Company
- Can Nurseries Meet the Objectives of SITES? Tom Quigley, owner, Olympic Nursery; past president, WSNLA
SUSTAINABLE SITES PILOT PROJECTS:
INTEGRATING SUSTAINABILITY METRICS AND CREATIVE DESIGN PROCESS
Thursday, September 30, 2010
Sponsored by Seattle Public Utilities
Workshop Description
The new Sustainable Sites (SITES) rating system evaluates site and landscape design, similar to the LEED system for green buildings (learn more at the Sustainable Site website).
This workshop will present an overview of the SITES rating guidelines, and show how these metrics can be used to inspire quality and performance throughout project design and construction. Three projects among over 150 selected for the SITES pilot program will demonstrate the challenges
and benefits of using this new rating system to guide sustainable site design. Panelists will explore where these innovative guidelines are leading us, and discuss how they are changing professional practice and the design process.
