Committee Description

The Public Relations and Awareness Committee is responsible for delivering information through traditional media, social media, and the chapter website about events, programs and landscape architecture-related information to chapter members and the general public. The committee is involved in the planning and publicizing of WASLA events, Chapter Initiative projects, and coordinating public awareness campaigns with National ASLA.

Tasks and Goals

  • World Landscape Architecture Month (WLAM) – WLAM occurs during the month of April to remind and inform citizens that landscape architecture is both universal and individually significant, producing a daily impact on life. The Public Relations and Awareness Committee leads efforts to promote the discipline through participating in the National ASLA social media campaign as well as traditional media efforts and hosting events.
  • PARK(ing) Day – PARK(ing) Day is an international annual celebration in which local community members, students, and designers transform metered parking spaces into temporary parklets. The Public Relations and Awareness Committee provides assistance in permitting, promoting, and designing the event for WASLA members across the state to make this event happens.
  • Social Media –The Public Relations and Awareness Committee posts to the WASLA Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter accounts. Social media posting is crucial as it enables networking and promotion of causes and events at low cost and high impact.
  • Landscape Architecture Guide – The Public Relations and Awareness Committee is currently beginning the development of a landscape architecture guide. This guide will raise awareness of landscape architecture by highlighting the best examples of the profession on a state-wide basis. We are currently searching for writers, photographers, graphic artists, history buffs, and technically savvy volunteers.
  • National Park Service Annual Design Charrette - WASLA maintains a partnership with the National Park Service, Rivers, Trails and Community Assistance (NPS-RTCA) program to conduct design charrettes helping communities across the  State to envision amenities such as regional trails, parks and other facilities. To date, 13 charrettes have occurred with the most recent in Kendall (Whatcom County).

How You Can Get Involved

If you want to contribute your thoughts, expertise, and time; please join us as a volunteer. New ideas and new faces are always welcome. Please contact the committee chair Lucas Vannice, lvannice@watershedco.com.

  • Our newsletter is published the 2nd Friday of each month. The deadline for submissions is the 1st Friday of each month. We’re always looking for exciting landscape architecture-related articles. If you’re a student or professional passionate about a specific topic, please let us know about it.
  • News or event listings may be added to the WASLA website.
  • For emails to WASLA membership, aka “News and Announcements,” priority is given to WASLA related items and limited to two per week. Three business days’ notice is required, especially for time-sensitive events. Non-WASLA items may occasionally be distributed if there is space in our publishing calendar.
