Editor's Note
Stephanie Stroud

September is the month of transition. Summer is coming to an end. Days are shortening, and nights are cooler. Students return to school. We begin to plan our fall projects. During this month of change, we celebrate creativity and a cross-pollination of landscape architecture, art and civic pride with a holiday called Park(ing) Day. As this transition is happening, we take the necessary time to honor public space and how folks of different backgrounds and professions can come together to create something interesting, engaging, and unique. It is activities such as Park(ing) Day that challenge us to think quickly, creatively, and together as a group. These are skills that, as landscape architects, deserve refreshing and strengthening to keep us fresh and relevant.

The WASLA Events Committee Needs You!

Do you organize your friends' activities for fun? Do you enjoy managing events? Do you fantasize about planning weddings or other occasions? We need you!

We are looking for volunteers to help kick-start the new WASLA Events Committee. This newly formed committee will replace the cyclical Conference, Awards and Professional Development committees.  The reason behind this much needed change is to take advantage of the institutional knowledge of committee members; streamline the efficiency of our efforts; and to provide more services to you, our members. The objective of this committee is to add value to members' relationship with WASLA by providing specialized events for networking, education, professional development, and recognition within the profession.

20 More Historic Landscapes Added to HALS

The Documented Historic Landscapes section of ASLA's Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS) website, including the HALS map, has been updated. There are currently 720 HALS documented historic landscapes on the list, up from 700 in March 2016. This list is provided by National Park Service and updated quarterly, with links to the documentation on the Library of Congress' website.

Thinking About Going Federal?

ASLA is working with the Landscape Architecture Foundation to host the webinar Landscape Architects as Federal Leaders on September 15, from 2-3 p.m. EDT. The webinar will discuss the benefits of working in the federal government from representatives of three major federal agencies: U.S. Forest Service, U.S. General Services Administration, and the Smithsonian Institution.

National Park Service Turns the Big 1-0-0!

On August 25th, the National Park Service turned a century old!

One hundred years ago, President Woodrow Wilson signed the "Organic Act," creating the National Park Service-a new federal bureau in the Department of the Interior which, at that time, was responsible for protecting the 35 national parks and monuments. The act stated that "the Service thus established shall promote and regulate the use of the Federal areas known as national parks, monuments and reservations...by such means and measures as conform to the fundamental purpose of the said parks, monuments and reservations, which purpose is to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations."

As we look forward to the future, we can celebrate the country's National Park System of 413 protected sites, including the newly added Katahdin National Monument in Maine's north woods. Happy Birthday National Park Service!

Support the Kenichi Nakano Endowed Scholarship Fund for Landscape Architecture

For over four decades, Kenichi Nakano graced the Pacific Northwest with exceptionally subtle and inviting modernist design, generously contributed to community and civic life, and mentored generations of students and professionals of all disciplines.

On August 8, 2012, we lost our teacher, mentor, and friend all too soon.

Your gift in memory of Kenichi to the Kenichi Nakano Endowed Scholarship Fund will leave a lasting legacy and support outstanding students in the University of Washington's Department of Landscape Architecture.

UW Landscape Architecture Internship/ Practicum Portal

UWLA PAC, Internship + Research Committee

The Landscape Department at the University of Washington has been working hard on providing its students with valuable resources that can better connect them with local employers for internships and practicum opportunities.

Prior to developing these resources we sent a survey to our local employer list to get feedback on what firms wanted and if they would use specific resources. We took this information and over the summer developed a space where employers can submit internships and practicums and positions to a page that is only accessible by our students.
