Before I discuss some of the goals the Executive Committee and myself have for the next couple of years, I want to thank Courtney Landoll, ASLA for her tireless service to the chapter most recently as Chapter President. Her passion for all things Washington ASLA shone through in her correspondence with the Executive Committee and to the chapter as a whole. As Courtney mentioned in last month’s newsletter her term has come to an end. Following an energizing week in Denver and the ASLA National Meeting, the presidential torch has been passed to me. I am honored to accept the challenge of sustaining and expanding the chapter over the next two years...

Volunteer Spotlight: Don Benson
This month, we pay tribute to Don Benson. Don has served in multiple capacities on the Executive Committee including Chapter President and Trustee, among others. Don spear-headed our association with the National Park Service and as a result has organized countless charrettes, including our most recent one in Pend Oreilles (check out pics on our WASLA facebook page). Don has also been instrumental in developing an association with APA Washington. Don has been a pillar of our organization. For all you do, thank you, Don!

Mark Your Calendar! Introduction to Irrigation Design! February 4th, 2015
Introduction to Irrigation Design is a one-day course for landscape architects with limited irrigation design experience. The course will include slide presentations, whiteboard sketches, actual material reviews, and design examples.
Learning objectives include:
- Knowledge of irrigation design principles
- Knowledge of basic water hydraulics (pressure, flow, and velocity)
- Familiarity with landscape irrigation components, methods, and terminology
- Enhanced knowledge to create working irrigation design drawings

Trustee's Report: December 2014

I’ve just returned from the Board of Trustees meeting in Denver, which was held for 1-1/2 days right before the conference. The most exciting news from the Trustees is that we voted to proceed with funding renovation work on our headquarters building in Washington D.C. The building was purchased back in 1997 for $2.3 million. At the time, it was a new 12,000 square foot spec building. The building was recently appraised at $6.9 million – an increase of 189% in value since the purchase! That part of Chinatown has seen an incredible amount of investment in new development in the past few years, which is not surprising considering its close proximity to the Capitol Building and the White House...

Eastern Washington Report: Pend Oreille River Passage Trail Charrette

Join the UW Department of Landscape Architecture and Professional Advisory Committee, ARCADE, UW Runstad Center for Real Estate Studies, and UW Department of Urban Design and Planning at the Frye Art Museum for a panel discussion on Detroit with thought leaders who are at the heart of the city's transformation and revival.
Detroit provides a means to study fundamental urban transformation and innovation that comes from both the top down and the grassroots level. The renewal happening in the city presents a ripe opportunity to evaluate and test civic strategies with the goal of understanding how to maximize a city’s resiliency in the service of rapid positive change in the future. On August 8, 2012, we lost our teacher, mentor, and friend all too soon.

UW Landscape Architecture Internship/ Practicum Portal
UWLA PAC, Internship + Research Committee
The Landscape Department at the University of Washington has been working hard on providing its students with valuable resources that can better connect them with local employers for internships and practicum opportunities.
Prior to developing these resources we sent a survey to our local employer list to get feedback on what firms wanted and if they would use specific resources. We took this information and over the summer developed a space where employers can submit internships and practicums and positions to a page that is only accessible by our students...
