President's Message

Today, I am proud to announce that WASLA is coordinating an educational session with Victor Stanley to bring Rainer Stenge from Oslo, Norway to Seattle. The session will occur on Monday, November 3rd in the evening and will be followed by a catered reception. Exact times and location to be determined.
I am also excited by the year’s election ballot for the WASLA EC. We have a lot of new names and faces covering West, East and South Washington. Please remember to vote!
Last, I wanted to share that one of my fellow Chapter Presidents, Jeannette Compton, is presenting about Urban Renewal and Resilient Design at the SXSW Festival. She encourages the rest of us to get out and talk about landscape architecture beyond our own professional community. I couldn’t agree more. With that, I will leave you the question, "What can you do to promote the profession of landscape architecture beyond your office and your clients?" If we all make it a goal to do one thing in 2015, what a difference that could make!

WASLA, SDF And PARK(ing) Day: A Huge Success!
Months of coordination with partners at SDOT and the Seattle Design Festival paid off with smashing success! On Friday, September 19th, Seattle joined the worldwide celebration of PARK(ing) Day.
2014 PARK(ing) Day Seattle Stats: The figures below show why 2014 PARK(ing) Day Seattle was the best year yet!
- Participants set up fifty parks—more than in any prior year—across the city, including six by WASLA member firms.
- More than 150 community members explored the process of public space design by creating a pop-up park.
- 25 volunteers, including many from WASLA, United Way, and other groups, assisted with event coordination and day-of documentation through photography and visitor survey.

- 13 parks received PARK(ing) Day Awards. Click here to view this year’s PARK(ing) Day Seattle Award Winners. Awards were announced at the SDF Closing Party by Matt Lerner, co-founder of WalkScore.

IBPI: Trail Design, 1.5-Day Workshop
IBPI is excited to announce an upcoming professional development workshop with an exclusive focus on designing bicycle and pedestrian multi-use trails. Taught by designers from Alta Planning + Design, this is a highly interactive course that includes classroom presentations and field tours of some of the biggest trail challenges and best solutions in Portland. Professionals who are engaged in planning, designing or advocating for bicycle and pedestrian networks at the community or regional level are invited to attend. The course is also open to engineering and planning students.

Landscape In Motion: UW's Campus Landscape Framework Oct. 20, 2014
Vice Provost Paul Jenny, UW Architect Rebecca Barnes, UW Landscape Architect Kristine Kenney, and UW faculty member Thaisa Way are pleased to announce the symposium Landscape in Motion: UW’s Campus Landscape Framework on October 20, 2014 in celebration of the release of a working draft of the Campus Landscape Framework (CLF). The CLF initiative was undertaken by the Office of the University Architect in 2013 to address the need for guidance regarding the stewardship of the campus landscape, with the involvement of many UW units and the assistance of Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates.

WASHINGTON, D.C., September 3, 2014 -- Conference organizers are delighted to announce that Sally Jewell, the United States Secretary of the Interior, will present a keynote address at the mid-day plenary of the National Workshop on Large Landscape Conservation (NWLLC) on Thursday, October 23, 2014.
Secretary Jewell will share with Workshop participants her strategic insight into how managing at the landscape scale offers solutions to the significant conservation challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. She will bring to the task her wide-ranging experience as a working scientist, a corporate CEO and a member of the President's Cabinet.

UW Landscape Architecture Internship/ Practicum Portal
UWLA PAC, Internship + Research Committee
The Landscape Department at the University of Washington has been working hard on providing its students with valuable resources that can better connect them with local employers for internships and practicum opportunities.
Prior to developing these resources we sent a survey to our local employer list to get feedback on what firms wanted and if they would use specific resources. We took this information and over the summer developed a space where employers can submit internships and practicums and positions to a page that is only accessible by our students.
We hope this will increase our students' experience opportunities that will aid in their skill development.
