President's Message

WELCOME BACK STUDENTS!
I was fortunate to return to my alma mater, Virginia Tech, early this month to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the College of Architecture and Urban Studies. It was rewarding and gratifying to see the complex issues today’s students of landscape architecture are grappling with—looking at problems from the macro and micro scale, using research to inform design, and considering interdisciplinary approaches to aid their problem solving. In addition to the now typical computer-generated 3D models, they were also using sketching and physical models to produce design concepts. It left me feeling excited about the future of our profession and the students who will carry on the landscape architecture legacy. While today’s students embrace modern software and ideas, they have not forgotten the basics behind good design and are no less driven in their pursuit of making the world a better place than previous generations.

I am sure many of you witnessed the giant glory of the most-recent super moon, or perhaps one of the super moons which preceded it this Summer. This particular super moon also happened to be a harvest moon (the full moon which occurs closest to the autumn equinox.) There’s nothing quite like a beaming, pumpkin-like mass of glowing rock high in the sky to remind us of our agricultural past—our ancestors harvested crops under its light—and to make us aware of the incredible beauty and power of nature.

Splash Parks and Landscape Architects

For the modern splash park, several key design elements are required. The most important element is that there is no or very little standing water around the pad. This element allows for the public use of the splash park without the need for supervisory by lifeguards.
Other design, construction, and equipment requirements for splash pads are outlined in the WAC 246-260-081 rules. RCW LAWS:
There are several rules and regulations in the state of Washington, and many counties within the state have their own set of rules and regulation regarding the permitting, construction, design, and maintenance of splash parks.

Happy September WASLA members! Can't you just feel the autumn air slowly falling upon us. If you're like me, one of the best things about fall is... Football Season! This year I'd like to kick off the season with a WSU alumni and student meet and greet. This will offer a great opportunity for current landscape architecture students to meet and ask questions to WSU LA professionals. This will be an informal event held in Carpenter Hall - the new digs for the School of Design + Construction. The event is scheduled for October 4th, two hours before the Cougar Homecoming Game. So all of you WSU alumni already planning to make it to the big game, please stop by Carpenter Hall to see what the new program is all about and to offer up advice and answers to some of the students' burning questions!

Biomimicry Puget Sound: Uniting Designers with Nature's Tool Box

On August 21, Biomimicry Puget Sound hosted the unveiling of the in-depth work of Biomimicry Oregon and their investigation into the “Genius of Place” in the Pacific Northwest. If you’re not familiar with Biomimicry Oregon, they are an organization along with Biomimicry Puget Sound and several others nationwide that are dedicated to inspiring sustainable and innovative solutions based on nature’s genius. Biomimicry Oregon’s team, assigned with the challenge of identifying how stormwater is managed in nature, embarked into the landscape to study how native organisms absorb, collect, slow, store, and move water. This report contains their analysis, with a focus on seven (of originally 80) resulting “biological strategies”: canopy structure, downed wood, root structure, beaver dams, parasitic resource sharing, leaf absorption, and the absorbent networks of mycorrhizal fungi. Each strategy is broken into a fundamental design principle, with suggested applications for our cities.

UW Landscape Architecture Internship Practicum Portal
The Landscape Department at the University of Washington has been working hard on providing its students with valuable resources that can better connect them with local employers for internships and practicum opportunities.
Prior to developing these resources we sent a survey to our local employer list to get feedback on what firms wanted and if they would use specific resources. We took this information and over the summer developed a space where employers can submit internships and practicums and positions to a page that is only accessible by our students.
