Happy International Landscape Architecture Month! And a reminder that Earth Day 2022 is next Friday, April 22nd. I can typically be found that day at the Point Robinson Lighthouse on Vashon Island picking marine trash off the beach. To honor Earth Day, I urge you all to do something local, be it picking up trash, planting trees, or pulling those noxious weeds from our local parks and forests.
Our annual WASLA Awards were held the evening of April 14th. A BIG thanks to everyone who helped put this together and to all those who attended. I was unable to attend, but I was following the live updates on our social media. Did you know that WASLA has a number of different social media accounts (Instagram, Facebook, etc.)? Log in, follow us, and check out who won. Again, congratulations to the winners! Now that Spring has sprung, it is time for us to look forward to our annual WASLA Conference this October in SeaTac. We will need volunteers to help with the planning, the call for papers, the session reviews, etc. to ensure we have an incredible event. Contact [email protected] to volunteer, we'll put you to work.
Lastly, snow in April? Weird. And for the past week our farm has been home to a young Blue Heron who is plucking little frogs from the tall grass near my hazelnut hedge. She/he is a bit skittish but the bird's elegance continues to amaze. And an island apiarist has set up some working hives outside my barn to take advantage of the madrone forest across the road. It reminded me of a project our office did for the Oregon Zoo that had the tag line "small things matter." Small actions, like making a home for bees or putting out nesting materials for birds all have an impact on the wildlife around us. Sometimes it seems that the challenges are so overwhelming that we can't overcome the inertia. In 1999, I moved to Vashon and had 3.5 acres of Scotch Broom to tackle. It seemed too large to tackle. Bit by bit, I pulled out the Broom and each spring I check for seedlings and pull those. This afternoon, I found two seedlings on 3.5 acres. It took 22 years, and it will take constant vigilance, but a new weed has moved in - tansy ragwort. I'm taking the same approach with that. It has long been my belief that landscape architects are the best problem solvers. We are tenacious, we are creative, and we are a small and mighty profession. Small things matter. So think small, think local, and you'll make a lasting difference.

Exciting News!
Olmsted Proclamation Introduced in Congress

This year on April 26th marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Frederick Law Olmsted and Representatives French Hill (AR) and Debbie Dingell (MI) have introduced a bipartisan measure, H. Res. 1013, to recognize and celebrate Olmsted’s legacy. Please take a moment to urge your House of Representatives member to cosponsor this special legislation that celebrates Olmsted and the profession of landscape architecture.
The premier landscape architect of the 19th century, Olmsted is known for designing several iconic outdoor spaces and promoting the development of large parks and park systems for public benefit in many communities. Today, landscape architects continue this legacy by planning and designing healthy, resilient, and equitable parks and other outdoor recreation spaces of many scales in urban, suburban, and rural communities across the nation.
Contact your legislator today to urge them to join in sponsoring H. Res. 1013, legislation for Congress to recognize Frederick Law Olmsted, the founder of landscape architecture.

design exCHANGE 2022 will highlight emerging architectural and landscape projects designed by regional practitioners. This preview of un-built work and the design process behind built projects gives students and the public a rare glimpse into the studio process and provides a forum for public discourse between the region’s academic community and practitioners. An overview of the design innovation and influence of regional practitioners both large and small, design exCHANGE 2022 offers an exciting preview of future projects to be built regionally, nationally and globally. The opening night reception, with food and live music, is open to students, professionals, and the Seattle design community.
Projects exhibited must be current “on the boards” unbuilt work. Images documenting the design process and evolution of the project are strongly recommended. These can include but are not limited to iterative studies, ideas explored yet discarded, development of details supporting the core concept, informal sketches and process drawings, etc.
Exhibit Duration: May 13 – 27, 2022

It is a new year, and Idaho-Montana ASLA is going to spend 2022 reconnecting with our community.
After a short hiatus, Rendezvous, our bi-annual chapter conference, is back in 2022. In May, we will be gathering with our members, lecturers, sponsors, vendors, and allied professionals for a fun weekend of education and inspiration on the University of Idaho campus in Moscow, Idaho. We hope you will join us as we celebrate the profession and each other. Mark your calendars, additional event details will be provided in March 2022.

Join GRiT and our partner, Green Roofs for Healthy Cities, for this one-day event featuring best practices for long-term, thriving green roofs. Keynote presenter, Dr. Vivek Shandas, will discuss how disparities in environmental quality affect diverse communities and how green roofs can address these. Green roof professionals, architects, and landscape architects will discuss approaches to successful green roof design and maintenance, including examples of their work of low-income housing. There will be time for networking, and a self-guided tour will provide opportunities to meet green roof design and maintenance professionals. CEU credits are available.

The Cultural Landscape Foundation is hosting an event in Kirkland featuring the work of Broadhurst + Associates on June 18 as part of a program called Garden Dialogues
Garden Dialogues provides exclusive access to great landscapes where one can learn the secrets to their creation.
In 2022 The Cultural Landscape Foundation’s (TCLF) Garden Dialogues program, which provides exclusive access to exceptional landscapes, will go coast to coast, featuring projects that have been designed by some of today’s most talented and visionary landscape architects.
Participants will learn first-hand from landscape architects, architects, and their clients about the secrets to creating great gardens. These tours are limited to 30 guests to make them intimate, and last between 90 minutes and two hours to make them relaxed. LA CES™ professional development hours may be available to attendees.
