3D Design Visualization: Bringing Ideas to Life

Friday, May 29 | 10:30 - 11:20am
Location: Gala Rooms 1-2

Speakers: Dennis Meyer, Jacob Dumler and Dean Alker, The Portico Group

Description:

Design Visualization can be a conduit for combining multiple disciplines into a single visual product thereby ensuring a tight, cohesive project, effectively meeting everyone’s design elements in the middle, beginning or end, of a project.

It can also help the designer and end user come together, by providing clear communication tools in the form of descriptive, evocative or even photo realistic eye level perspective, elevated still images or fully immersive, captivating animations.  Even preliminary concept diagrams can be brought to life and be made much clearer to everyone, helping ensure better understanding amongst design team and client.

Design Visualization’s still images and movies can also provide fund raising material for the client –somewhere between 2D design drawings (often not understood by the layperson) and the fully built project – helping everyone see the vision of the project and bridging the gap between concept and reality.

This session will illustrate how the tools can be used, and their benefits maximized, to keep design intent at the forefront throughout the design and construction process.

Learning Objectives:
  • Identify ways in which Design Visualization can enhance the design process, using rendered models to improve their ability to communicate design ideas to clients.
  • Recognize capabilities of specific software tools used to produce enhanced documents, comparing levels of detail to determine when Design Visualization is an appropriate tool.
  • Define Design Visualization and differentiate it from other modeling tools, evaluating ways in which it can streamline all design phases.
  • Weigh the value of Visualization to their practice, evaluating costs/benefits to them and to clients, and assessing whether it is a core or contracted activity for their office.
