Innovative Design for Parkour in Public Space

Description:

Design has the power to inspire movement through our built and natural environment, and parkour is one of the fastest growing sports in our urban spaces with major events held across the country. You see parkour everywhere, from major films to kids playing in their everyday environment. Learn how parkour’s influence on our built and natural environment is expanding, and what that means for designing public spaces. Understand the tools and strategies needed to successfully integrate active movement into the design of the built environment with local case studies, from recent installations at the Seattle Design Festival to park design strategies in King County and Seattle, as well as inspiring design from around the world.

Learning Objectives:
  • Understand what parkour is and how it relates to the design of urban spaces.
  • Learn how to recognize, promote, or mitigate risk associated with the active movement through urban spaces.
  • Learn the value of active movement as essential components of healthy lifestyles for all ages.
  • See “parkour vision” in action as an inspiring new approach to design.
Speaker Bio: Juliet Vong, ASLA, LEED AP, President, Hough Beck & Baird Inc.

Juliet is a landscape architect and President of HBB. With 18 years’ experience designing public space, Juliet creates unique places that reinforce community identity and appeal to diverse users.  Her experience working with parkour athletes in the recent design of public space highlights an opportunity to activate the urban environment in a new and innovative way.

Co-Speaker Bio: Tyson Cecka, Executive Director, Parkour Visions

The Executive Director of Parkour Visions (501(c)3), Tyson engages the design community and agencies to promote parkour in the built environment. He also led the team to the design and build a modular parkour structure for the Seattle Design Festival. Tyson trains around the world and is a leading advocate for the safe and widespread practice of parkour in America.
