Happy Fall, everyone! Don't forget to buy your tickets for the 2017 WASLA Awards Ceremony and Reception. It will be THE event of the season! You do not want to miss out on the outstanding project submissions, the amazing food, drinks and venue at the Olympic Sculpture Park Paccar Pavilion. Not only is it a wonderful time to get inspired by your peers, but it is also a great opportunity to connect and network with other landscape professionals. So grab a colleague, get registered, and help us celebrate our profession and the beautiful spaces that are a product of our talented peers. Doors will open at 6:30 pm on Thursday, November 2nd.
Also in the pipeline is the 2017 ASLA Meeting & Expo. Each year, Chapter Presidents, President-elects, Trustees, and Trustee-elects reconvene to talk about leadership and the future of our profession. As a young(er) landscape architect, I always gain so much knowledge from fellow chapter presidents across the country and leave the meeting inspired to start the new year with fresh ideas, new approaches to solving problems, and motivated to provide our membership with the best programs, events and tools out there. After the Chapter Presidents Council (CPC) and Board of Trustees (BOT) meetings wrap up, our time is topped off with educational sessions from some of the most esteemed designers in our profession, in a new city, with a huge Expo of leading industry manufacturers and representatives. The collective experience reinvigorates my passion and love for designing creative and functional spaces for everyone. If you are able to make it to Los Angeles, be sure to stop and say 'Hi.' I cannot wait to see everyone there!

The annual WASLA Professional Awards Reception is just around the corner on November 2nd. This year the event will be held at the Paccar Pavilion at Olympic Sculpture Park-a stunning setting to celebrate the incredible work of our profession. The Washington Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (WASLA) has opened the Call for Proposals for our 2018 Annual Conference. We invite landscape architects, academics, allied professionals, and vendors of the profession to submit proposals that fit this year's conference theme. Department of Licensing Plans Computer Systems Upgrade
The Department of Licensing (DOL) is in the early planning stages to replace the existing computer system and sub-systems that support business and professional licensing and regulation. They plan to upgrade to a modernized, flexible, and easily maintained system, which will provide many benefits to licensees and the public:
- Integrated licensing and regulation systems for more efficient service
- Expanded online account management features
- Additional payment options and mobile-friendly alternatives
- Online complaint filing
- More effective and timely communication, including renewal notices via email
- Robust public search capabilities and consumer access to data and statistics. Read More
Recap of WSU "Translating Landscapes" Workshops

In the fall of 2017, WSU landscape architecture professor Steve Austin led a series of analytical sketching workshops entitled "Translating Landscapes." These workshops were held in three distinct Palouse landscapes: Kamiak Butte, Rose Creek Nature Preserve, and the Snake River Canyon. The purpose of these workshops was to encourage students to be able to capture "beyond what our eyes can see." Professor Austin believes that by learning to envision the world beyond what our visual sense provides, students can gain a deeper, more authentic understanding of landscapes. Students were challenged to visualize and illustrate landscape cross-sections, plan views, natural processes, and the micro-climates they found themselves in. The workshops were also a good excuse to get some exercise, sunshine, and fresh air. Nearly 30 students attended the three workshops, and represented all three design disciplines of the School of Design and Construction at WSU. Professor Austin plans another series of workshops next fall entitled "Urban Translations," which will focus on urban environments.
Film Screening with Abe Drechsler
Within Formal Cities focuses on architecture and design's role in addressing problems faced by informal settlements. To learn about these settlements, two recent graduates, Brian Gaudio, and Abe Drechsler, travelled to five cities in South America: Lima, Santiago, Sao Paulo, Rio De Janeiro, and Bogota where they visited projects and interviewed over 30 designers, government officials and residents. The film is a summary of lessons learned from that trip and provides perspective on the profession of architecture's role in public interest design. It includes interviews and/or projects from Equipo de Mazzanti, Urban Think Tank, ELEMENTAL and Peter Land (PREVI).
The idea for the film originated when Brian and Abe received NC State University's Duda Traveling Fellowship in 2014. This allowed them to study how architects and designers were trying to solve the housing crisis. Through crowdfunding and the help of the American Institute of Architects, they were able to turn this academic fellowship into a self-produced film.

Kenichi Nakano Retrospective - Exhibit Reception
The UW Landscape Architecture department is preparing a retrospective exhibit about Kenichi Nakano to be displayed this autumn quarter. In addition to documentation of his outstanding life and work, we will include people's recollections of what we loved about Kenichi. His spirit of mentorship touched many and had a large influence on the practice of landscape architecture in the Northwest in its own right.
Please save the date for the exhibit reception on Thursday November 16th. More info to come. Hope to see you there!
