Climate Action Committee - Stipend

Climate Action Vision Development Stipend

The Climate Action Vision Development Stipend is a new project managed by the WASLA Climate Action Committee that creates opportunities for landscape architecture students to build their resumes and advance the priority work of the committee. This first iteration of the stipend position is a pilot program that supports a university student to lead in analyzing the connection between landscape architecture and climate action in Washington and developing a strategic approach to advancing climate action for professionals in the state. The recipient of the Fall 2025 Climate Action Vision Development Stipend will provide the following deliverables, all of which are based on the recently completed WASLA Climate Action Survey of over 30 professionals:

  • A written summary and brief analysis of the survey responses.

  • Graphics representing key themes and takeaways from the survey.

  • A written set of recommendations for next steps that includes resources, relevant events, and ways to align priorities from the survey with the ASLA Climate Action Plan. This will represent the most crucial deliverable and should outline actionable strategies for the committee to pursue to advance key goals while considering the time and resources available to the committee. (This could include means of increasing committee capacity but any such assumption should be modest and agreed upon by the position mentor)

The student will be connected with a primary mentor from the Climate Action Committee who will provide guidance during scheduled check-ins with the student. The student is also welcomed to connect with the larger committee during monthly meetings.

The schedule for the stipend begins in October and wraps up in December 2025, with the student performing approximately 40 hours of analysis, graphics, and recommendation work before the end of 2025. The stipend award is capped at $1000 total and will be paid in parts on a monthly basis. Funding for the stipend is subject to official WASLA board approval on October 20th though no objections are anticipated.  The selected recipient will meet with one or more members of the Climate Action Committee 2-3 times during the course of the stipend for guidance:

 Draft Schedule

  • Oct 27th - Nov 3rd: Intro meeting

  • Nov 10th-21st: First check-in meeting to review draft deliverables. Draft deliverables due: results summary and recommendations

  • Dec 1st-5th:  Second check-in meeting. Final results summary due. Draft graphic representation due.

  • Dec 18th-22nd: Wrap up meeting. Review final materials. Final deliverables all due: Results summary, graphic representation, and recommendations (minor work can continue to the end of year if needed/desired.)

This is an exciting opportunity for the stipend recipient to develop industry-leading knowledge of sustainable design and climate-action priorities, while equipping WASLA with a clear, action-ready understanding of next steps and focus areas to advance climate action work.
