The Opportunity: The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has an exceptional opportunity for an innovative Landscape Designer to join the Landscape Architecture Office based in Vancouver. This professional will be involved in a wide variety of transportation projects in SW Washington supporting the infrastructure while ensuring the health of the surrounding environment. This involves supporting WSDOT's strategic plan and roadside policy through wise management of the roadside as an asset, delivering right-sized projects, supporting multi-modal transportation options, improving environmental conditions, providing long-term stewardship of environmental mitigation sites, and meeting the expectations of the public for livable communities. To learn more, please watch the following video: Why WSDOT? This position will perform the following work: Develop roadside and mitigation design solutions and prepare contract plans and estimates. Perform specialized construction inspection work as required and provide recommendations to WSDOT construction engineers. Assist in the development of biennial budgets for Environmental Establishment Program projects ensuring funding needs are identified and requested. Oversee site management and schedule development for plant establishment work. On-site inspections with interdisciplinary teams for mitigation site review and resolve issues to ensure sites meet permit obligations. Provide guidance, direction and field management in alignment with agency policies and procedures. Work outdoors throughout SW Washington in all types of weather. Develop and manage project schedules and balance multiple priorities. Clearly communicate verbally and in writing with internal customers and the public.

Job Requirements

The ideal candidate for this position will have the following:

  • Professional Bachelors or Master's Degree in Landscape Architecture from an accredited program.
  • WA Commercial Applicator License and appropriate endorsements or ability to obtain within 12 months of appointment.
  • Communicate effectively with diverse groups utilizing oral, written, and electronic communication methods.
  • Knowledge, skills, and ability to conduct site studies, compile and analyze data, analyze existing features and conditions.
  • Skills to analyze roadside functions and develop/select alternatives and solutions; develop contract plans, specifications and estimates.
  • Knowledge and ability to perform on-site inspections and make professional recommendations.
  • Ability to work outside of normal working hours occasionally as needed.
  • Ability to traverse uneven terrain. Ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Valid Driver's license.
  • Preferred licensing, certifications, skills or abilities: Professional Landscape Architect in Washington State.
  • ISA Certified Arborist.
  • Experience with large site grading, drainage, site engineering, and hydrology.
  • Experience in construction contract administration.
  • Experience with native plant material, plant ecology, soils, and environmental restoration.


Terms of Employment

Note: This position is covered by a union shop provision.
