President's Remarks

Dear WASLA Members and Readers,

I guess it is summer now! We just skipped right over the whole “April showers” portion and went straight to the “May flowers and excessive heat warnings” part of the year. Either way, it is nice to feel some warmth for a change.

A lot has happened since the last newsletter. For one, we had our WASLA Awards, which had an amazing turnout. It always brings me joy to see our landscape architecture community coming together to reconnect and celebrate the great work that comes from our chapter. Thank you to everyone who helped plan and make the event possible, to everyone who submitted work, and to our sponsors who supported it.

We had our first Climate Action Committee webinar on May 11th. There were over 60 attendees from across the state tuning in to learn about ASLA’s Climate Action Plan and Field Guide and provide insights on what they would like the future webinars to address. I have been so inspired by the members of our Climate Action Committee, and I know they would always be happy to fold in new members who are enthusiastic about landscape architecture’s role in solving the climate crisis. You can learn more about what they do and utilize the fantastic resources they have put together (including a super useful Climate Action Plan Cheat-Sheet) at https://www.wasla.org/climate.

Since our last newsletter, we have also put out the call for nominations for open Board of Directors positions. These positions include the Eastern Member at Large, Western Member at Large, and Statewide Member at Large, which are each 1-year terms. These are great positions for people new to the board that want to get more involved. We also have open positions for the Trustee and President-Elect. Although these positions are a bigger commitment, they are immensely rewarding. You can read about the positions and their roles here, and you are always welcome to reach out to the current board members to learn more.

Finally, follow WASLA on LinkedIn! Our Communications Committee has revitalized our presence and is posting about our upcoming events and highlights from previous ones. It is a great way to stay informed about all things WASLA.

Warmly,

Nick Zurlini

   WASLA President

Nason Creek Community Forest Workshop
Call for Volunteers

The Nason Creek Community Forest is  714 acres in size and near the Lake Wenatchee area in the central Cascades. The Community workshop will take place over 1.5 days starting on Friday afternoon October 20 and continuing and wrapping up on Saturday October 21. It is being sponsored by the Chelan County Natural Resources Department, the National Park Service Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program(NPS-RTCA) and WASLA.

The Workshop  involves the placement of trails for hiking, biking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, design and placement of trailheads, and interpretation/educational opportunities with  active forest management and ecosystem conservation components. The workshop also involves brainstorming with local community members and will have teams led by landscape architects.

Please e-mail Don Benson at [email protected] or call at 206-297-1259 if you are interested in participating in this exciting volunteer effort. I look forward to your response. As many of you know, WASLA has collaborated with NPS-RTCA  in the past on many charrettes and workshops on both sides of the state.

Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS) 2023 Challenge Competition

For the 14th annual HALS Challenge competition, the Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS) invites you to document Working Landscapes. Historic “working” or “productive” landscapes may be agricultural or industrial and unique or traditional. Some topical working landscapes convey water for irrigation or provide flood control. Please focus your HALS report on the landscape as a whole and not on a building or structure alone. For this theme, the HAER History Guidelines may be helpful along with HALS History Guidelines.  For more information visit the link below.  If you have any questions, please email Duane Dietz at [email protected]

Deadline to submit short format histories: July 31, 2023

Awards will be presented: October 27-30, 2023, during the ASLA Conference on Landscape Architecture in Minneapolis
