President's Remarks

Vashon Island just wrapped its Strawberry Festival this past weekend, the first since 2019.  The Chamber of Commerce who organizes the event was clear from the beginning that, given covid and the economic challenges the past two years, all the vendor booths and many of the musical groups were going to be Vashon-based.  No carnival rides, no off-island marching bands or drill teams...also no politicians in the Saturday parade.  The Chamber recruited tirelessly for volunteers right up to the Friday night kickoff.

Those who volunteered were graciously and repeatedly thanked.  But much of the social media feedback focused on what was missing, not what the community was able to put together.  One response to a negative comment that struck me was: "You get out of it what you put into it. Please volunteer next year.  Be part of the fun."

Throughout my two-year term as president I have made calls for volunteers.I want to thank all those who have helped out WASLA over the most challenging two years I've ever experienced.  As we stride forward to build a new type of normal, consider volunteering.  Be part of the fun.

I also want to thank our sponsors for their continuing support. Much of what we are able to accomplish as a professional organization would be impossible without them.

Sincerely,

   WASLA President

Fall design workshop on the Olympic Peninsula to support planning for the Chimacum Ridge Community Forest

The Jefferson Land Trust, National Park Service – Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance (RTCA) program, and the Washington ASLA Chapter are excited to announce a call for participation in a one-day community workshop on October 22, 2022. WASLA volunteers will be asked to lead conversations around the placement of trails for hiking, biking, and equestrian use within an active forest management model and conservation easement framework. Brainstorm with local community members additional amenities and features that align with the desired forest experience and make recommendations for improving and adding to existing infrastructure.

Chimacum Ridge Community Forest is a 918-acre prominent landscape feature located within east Jefferson County. Nestled amongst small-heritage farms, it is owned and managed by the Jefferson Land Trust as a protected natural resource for the surrounding communities that include Chimacum and Port Townsend.  As an actively managed forest, with a conservation easement framework, Jefferson Land Trust is working with local community groups and stakeholders to provide recreation, access, and education opportunities for the public. Their mission is to promote equitable and inclusive access to local community resources, while stewarding the lands and providing education on their local heritage.

Send us an email here to RSVP to this exciting workshop!

Can’t make the October workshop? We’re creating a roster of other project needs and matching volunteers with the right skill set. Let us know you’re interested! [email protected]

Landscape architects can now receive grant funding associated with the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Through these programs, landscape architects will have new opportunities to propose novel design solutions to climate change, biodiversity loss, environmental injustice, and dangerous transportation corridors.

New Programs:

These grant opportunities are the result of your persistent advocacy with ASLA. The Government Affairs team will continue to monitor and advocate for additional funding resources. In the meantime, apply to these programs today!
