President's Remarks

Tim Slazinik

Fall is a busy time for Landscape Architects across Washington and for WASLA!  We have our highly anticipated Awards celebration in early November, and we hope to see you all there for some celebration and mingling. It’s a great night to come together and showcase the work from within the State and make a toast to another great year in the ASLA community. Our Sponsorship Prospectus is coming soon for our amazing sponsors and new sponsors alike to review and jump on the ASLA support bandwagon.  Without our amazing sponsors, we wouldn’t be able to so as much as we do, so be sure to thank them, and ask new potential sponsors if they are interested in supporting our profession.

For those of you who would like to call in to our Annual Meeting this Friday, October 17 from 2-2:30pm, call information is listed below.

About the project: Seattle Parks and Recreation has $10 million for capital improvements and activation at Freeway Park. Of the total, $750,000 is focused on activation of Freeway Park to be managed by the Freeway Park Association, and the remaining $9,250,000 will provide funding for capital improvements to repair, restore and possibly enhance the park. This $10 million is part of the public benefit package associated with the Convention Center expansion.

The scope of the capital project work builds on the Finding Freeway Park concept plan, produced by the Freeway Park Association, and includes infrastructure upgrades, lighting, wayfinding, and possibly a new restroom. The design phase is expected to be complete with all necessary permits/approvals and construction bid documents in hand by June 2021.

Professional Practice Networks (PPNs)...have you heard of this?  PPNs are a nationwide network of professionals that provide discussion groups and learning opportunities in several areas of interest. LinkedIn provides the platform, and members can join one discussion group for free; anything further is $15/group.  Group offerings include: Children's Outdoor Environments, Ecology and Restoration, Environmental Justice, Healthcare and Therapeutic Design, plus many more. It's a great way to get the pulse of what people are thinking and doing across the nation.  It's also a good opportunity to lead and contribute to discussions with your peers all across the country as a PPN Leader or Officer.
