President's Remarks
Tim Slazinik

On the heels of Black History Month, and as we prepare for World Landscape Architecture Month in April, we focus on the community of creative minds that make up this ever-changing profession. Landscape Architecture is a profession of growth, stewardship, and leadership within the design industry. We pride ourselves on ingenuity, open-mindedness, and genuine care for the world we live in. As such, we must also insist on creating and nurturing an inclusive world in which we, as landscape architects, are not only stewards of our environment as it pertains to natural systems, but also the people and cultures that inhabit and influence our environment. ASLA and WASLA are committed to a professional environment and where inclusion is a baseline, diversity is celebrated, and communication is paramount. We hope as members of our organization you join us as stewards of this beautifully diverse world we have the privilege of designing. As our Washington State Conference approaches this month, and as we engage in our first-ever state advocacy day in Olympia, we must come together as one community honoring all pasts, and encouraging all futures. Thank you for being a part of such an amazing community of professionals.

2019 WASLA Annual Conference Is Here

5th Annual Specifying Soils Event - Hosted by Cedar Grove

Cedar Grove would like to invite you to their 5th Annual Specifying Soils Event.

The lineup will included 3 LA-CES approved classes revolving around stormwater and its impacts on the environment. We realize many of you have come before, and although our soil samples are consistent with years past (and will be for all your projects), the information provided by our guest speakers is all new!

Spend the day with us to take an early step towards your required LA-CES credits and talk with us about our soils and manufacturing process.  We will provide further insight into the bulk soils industry and how our processes help your landscape visions come to light.

Additionally, our lunchtime keynote speaker Tim Abbe’s presentation has just been approved for 1 LA-CES credit as well.

We hope to see you there!

When: Thursday, March 28, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Where: The Mountaineers Club, 770 Sand Point Way NE, Seattle, WA 98115

More information can be found on the registration page HERE.

Call for Jurors – Local and national UW Student Awards

Dates have been set for the Local and National UW Student Awards!  I am hoping that you might consider participating this year.  Below are the dates and responsibilities:

Friday, May 17: Local Student Awards - reviewers will spend the day (plan on 8 AM - 5 PM) reviewing work hung by students.  This year the faculty are removing some of the smaller items (stand-alone drawing assignments, etc) and focusing on studio work.  Lunch will be at the Faculty Club and coffee/snacks will be available all day at the student coffee shop.

Saturday, May 18:  ASLA National Student Awards - reviewers will spend the morning (plan on 8 AM - 1 PM) hearing presentations by four students selected by the faculty – two BLA and two MLA candidates – and designating Honor and Merit Awards.

Week of May 13: Written Work Jury - participate on a team of jurors to review written work submitted by students.  These reviews are typically done at home with comments compiled during one meeting.

Please contact Carrie Culp at [email protected] with questions or to volunteer.
